It happened like this: in a certain mill there were thieves, or robbers. When they had climbed into the mill they lit up a hanged man’s hand they carried, setting light to its fingers — and one finger would not catch. So they said to one another: there are people here, someone is not asleep. They went looking for whoever was awake, and then set about the robbery; but the one who had not been sleeping got away from the mill, called the people together and roused the village. When the people came, the thieves ran from the mill and made for the forest, and the people after them, meaning to catch those thieves or robbers — but the forest was large and they caught no one, for they had hidden in a hole there; they had a pit of that kind.
